Sea Cadets
Your unit or training needs a website!
I am a strong supporter of the U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps. I developed my first Sea Cadet website (for the Aurora Division) in 2001, and at this point I have developed original websites for 5 units and 5 different trainings (some of which I've done for several years now), not including units or trainings using one of my templates.
A well-designed, properly maintained website can reap many benefits for a Sea Cadet unit or training. It provides a professional face, which can attract new recruits to the program. It can improve communication within the unit or training contingent. It can provide a forum to recognize good performance, promotions, awards, etc. (cadets and their parents LOVE to see them on the web!). It can provide resources for cadets that will help them succeed within the program. It can keep parents informed of what the cadets are up to while away at a training.
NOT having a website makes it harder for prospective recruits to find your unit. And in this day and age when most people, especially youth, are used to finding anything they need or want through Google or other web search engines, it makes your unit seem to be behind the times.
I have developed USNSCC websites for:
Units:
- Arleigh Burke DDG-51 Division, Avon, IN
- Aurora Division, Aurora, IL (NSCC Site of the Month Feb '02)
- Abe Lincoln Division, Joliet, IL (unit later disbanded)
- Ben Moreell Battalion, Port Hueneme, CA
- Coronado Battalion, Coronado, CA (NSCC Site of the Month May '05)
Trainings:
- Medical Training, Great Lakes, IL
- Recruit Training, Camp Pendleton, VA
- Seabee Training, Port Hueneme, CA
- Surgical Technician Training, San Diego, CA
- Winter Training Command, Port Hueneme, CA
Need someone to do it for you?
If you don't have the time or expertise locally, let me help you. As a former C.O. myself (and many other billets!), I know Sea Cadet units don't have a lot of money.

What you'll pay the other guys:
Finding costs on the web is difficult, because most web developers don't list their prices ("Contact us for a quote"; kind of like "if you have to ask, you can't afford it"). Of the few that do, prices range from $60-150 per hour. One place charges by the item ($25 for uploading 100 MB worth of files or photos; that's really only a few minutes of work!). Another place charges $380 for a basic ONE PAGE website, with your logo and 2 photos (that you provide). That same place charges $790 for a 4-5 page website. Too much!
What you'll get from me:
A web developer/webmaster who understands your needs, and believes strongly in teamwork, the core values of honor, courage, and commitment, and the slogan "It's for the cadets"
- E-mail consultations always no charge
- Template localization package:
- You provide requested info and local photos, I localize the site and upload it to your domain for you
- $100 for package's included services (That's about 1/8th their cost and you get a more comprehensive site!)
- Additional pages and services $25/hour* (That's less than 1/2 their cost!)
- Ongoing website maintenance or custom site development $25/hour*
*These prices are for NSCC/NLCC units ONLY; businesses or other organization prices are on the Site Development and Site Maintenance pages
Free Sea Cadet Templates
Important Note: The information below all applies to the original templates developed using Microsoft FrontPage. I will be developing new versions of all these templates that will NOT require FrontPage to maintain; my goal is to retain the general appearance and major elements in the FrontPage version. At this point I do not have a timeline for when these newer templates will be available.
Free Template Unit Website
To allow more units the benefits of having their own websites, I have developed a template unit website as a service to the U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps. Although there are different versions of this website with themes oriented toward different types of NSCC/NLCC units (see below), they share a common structure. There are 23 pages, 16 of which need to be localized; after initial set up, there are only 4 or 5 pages which will need to be updated regularly. Detailed instructions are provided that, depending on your level of knowledge and expertise and your web editing software, will allow you to have a comprehensive, professional appearing web presence for your unit in as little as an hour and a half, at no cost (other than your time, and your web hosting and domain registration fees). These templates were developed using Microsoft FrontPage 2003®, so your host will need FrontPage extension support. I also strongly suggest you have your site hosted on a Windows, NOT Linux, server if you're going to use these templates. You can easily maintain the site using either FrontPage 2003® or Microsoft SharePoint Services (often included in Office 2007) to avoid problems. (Note: DO NOT attempt to maintain these sites using other WSYIWYG HTML editors, such as Dreamweaver, etc.)
Available themes: (Click to view a PDF representation of the home page for each template; some also have links to currently active sites that were developed using these templates. The PDF may not look exactly like the page would appear on-screen; the PDF conversion process may have pushed some elements out of position, but you'll still get a good idea of the basic appearance of the page.)
- Division oriented (blue & gold w/ a "water" background) (PDF)
- Raleigh Battalion, Raleigh, NC
- Battalion oriented (woodland camo) (PDF)
- Montana Mountain Battalion, Helena, MT
- Squadron oriented (sky) (PDF)
- Training Ship oriented (blue & white) (PDF)
- Patriotic (red, white, & blue), suitable for all units (PDF)
Contact me to get one of these templates for your unit. After I get some basic unit contact information and web hosting log-in info, I will upload the template to your site, including a placeholder home page to give you a web presence while you're localizing the site. Again, this is FREE to USNSCC/USNLCC units, unless you need me to do the localizing for you.
Free Template Training Website
I have also developed a template training website as a service to the U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps. These themes have the same appearance as the unit templates, but a simplified structure better suited for providing advance information for cadets and keeping parents informed during the training. This sites only have 9 pages. Detailed instructions are provided that, depending on your level of knowledge and expertise and your web editing software, will allow you to have a comprehensive, professional appearing web presence for your training in as little as an hour and a half, at no cost (other than your time, and your web hosting and domain registration fees). These templates were developed using Microsoft FrontPage 2003®, so your host will need FrontPage extension support.
